(Infocast News) A drop in chipmaker shares on Tuesday hit pause on the latest rally, yanking indexes from the record highs achieved in the previous session.

The DJIA fell 324.80 points or 0.75%, to 42,740.42.

The S&P 500 fell 44.59 points or 0.76%, to 5,815.26.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 187.10 points or 1.01%, to 18,315.59.

Stocks fell in the three major European markets.

The FTSE 100 fell 43.38 points or 0.52%, to 8,249.28.

The German DAX fell 22.10 points or 0.11%, to 19,486.19.

The French CAC 40 fell 80.09 points or 1.05%, to 7,521.97.
